| September 4, 2008 Volume 1: 6 2008 Hurricane Relief Efforrt September 4th, 2008 Columbus Columbus Caribbean Association Appeals to the local community to help in our attempt to provide Hurricane Relief particularly for Haiti |

| | |  | | | Three major Tropical storms , two of which were categorized as Hurricanes in in less than 21 days have killed anywhere from 200 - 500 people in, Haiti. The Death toll according to other estimates is expected to rise as efforts to reach all the devastated areas continue. Tropical storms Gustav then Hanna and now Ike have been threatening six island nations in particular, Cuba, the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Dominican Republic , Jamaica and Haiti. Of the six the worst have been Turks and Caicos and Haiti. In Turks and Caicos home to 3000 people, nearly every home Grand Turk island was lost . In Haiti well over 11,000 homes in Haiti were lost, hundreds of thousands of people have been directly affected or displaced with and estimated 300,000 of them being children.There are an estimated 70,000 people currently in shelters. General numbers regarding toll from the various storms are as follows. Gustav: 76 in Haiti; 26 in the U.S. (19 in Louisiana, 4 in Georgia, 3 in Mississippi); 12 in Jamaica; 8 in Dominican Republic Hanna: 167 in Haiti; 2 in Puerto Rico; 1 in Dominican Republic Ike: 58 in Haiti; 1 in Dominican Republic. In the city of Gonaives, Haiti 495 bodies so far and there are 13 people missing. | | | | | | | How To Help | | | | | | The Columbus Caribbean Association is helping to coordinate Hurricane relief efforts locally in here Columbus , Ohio as well as establishing a ongoing disaster and relief fund. We are asking the Columbus Caribbean community and Community at large to make donations of non perishable goods ie., clothing, blankets, shoes, soap, etc. They can be dropped off at several locations around town : Enas Restaurant, Roots Records and C and L Performance Autos. Non Tax exempt donations can be made also to the Columbus Caribbean Association , and labeled ‘Hurricane relief’ in the form of check or money order if by mail or cash at esignated sites mentioned.
Any monetary donation given will go towards the cost of shipping the non perishable items, 80% of the remaining money after shipping will be sent directed as charity , and distributed among reputable charities . Charities such as the Red Cross for instance have been appealing for funds to assist in relief. A major portion of the funds collected will be given on behalf of the Columbus CAribbean Association to this charity Download pdf
The remaining 20% will stay as an on going part of 'The Columbus Caribbean Hurricane and Disaster relief fund', in anticipation of future and ungoing need.
