| Beijing Olympic 400m Hurdles Champ Melaine Walker Echos the sentiments of Many Jamaicans | | |
This is no average Champion . The 400 Meters is tough enough, much less adding Hurdles which she completed in 52.64 an Olympic record time.
Still focused on reality
In a TV interview given shortly after wining the 400 meter hurdles in record fashion Melaine stated "I would like the people of the area to put the guns down and stop the crime," "I want to ask the Jamaican people, particularly those in Maxfield Avenue, to hold down the crime. I am from that area and at one time it was good to live there. "I know that if we can control the crime we can get back to that point," . She got right to the heart of the matter from the her position on the world stage...
Too many Jamaicans have been touched by crime. This year alone close to 1000 people have been murdered in this island of less than 3 million, making it one of the world's "murder capitols". Many Jamaicans consider this a shameful disgrace. After all this is the island which gave the world the terms "One love" and "Irie"... but now also gave it "shotta "and "badman". Hope Jamaicans , non the less have an indominable spirit that is clearly demonstrated by these atheletes. The dance of Usain bolt, the staunch determination of Melaine , Asafa, and the rest is testimony to that fact.
It is many Jamaicans hope that besides atheletes and singers, every day working people at home and abroad will start to realize that Jamaica can be truly a paradise. Read more at Reuters
