Board of Directors to be announced in October: The Columbus Caribbean Association will be naming its Board of Directors in October. We will release the names of these members after final selection has been made via the web and our newsletter. Like many non profit organizations the founders usually serve as the Board of directors as well as the " arms and legs" of the organization until they are able to do a diligent search for individuals who can serve as the Board of Directors. While membership is critical in the longevity of an organization, many would argue that a Board of Directors is the most critical component in the development and maintenance of any successful organization's corporate structure. This is why the founders have taken the time to deliberate about our chosen prospective candidates. General Membership: We have had daily inquiries regarding membership. This is exciting ! There are so many people who are wondering how they can officially become members of the Columbus Caribbean Association. Do not worry you will have your chance to do so very soon. It is more than obvious that there a plenty of people who have been waiting and ready to get to work. No week goes by without there being questions about organizing scholarship funds, festivals, fund raising efforts, social events, volunteer efforts and businesses and we think that that is so very encouraging. This is why this organization is being established in the first place. So that these goals will be become a viable realities , we think the initial organizing stage should be done in an organized step wise and deliberate fashion that will maximize the chance of total success. We will announce the board next month, then announce the time of our first general meeting shortly there after. Thank you for your patience up to this point. At this general meeting we will have applications available for members to join. Membership forms will also be available online as well. [pdf and word.doc format] There will be opportunities to be a part of any number of committees , suited to members talents and interests. We anticipate that the Columbus Caribbean Association will be one of the most successful organization of its kind, not only in Ohio and the midwest but nationwide ! We are doing everything posibble to establish it on the firmest foundation possible. Till then continue to support Caribbean culture here locally as well as efforts that we promote for the good of the community. Thank You

August 21, 2008 Columbus Jamaica's Campbell Brown wins Olympic gold in the Women's 200 M in 21.74secs | | | Jamaicans are celebrating almost every day since the sprints began and today was no different ! Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamiaca successfully defended her Athen's Gold medal in the 200 meter today while Kerron Stewart also of Jamaica claimed the Bronze at 22seconds. The finals of the womens 200 meters featured 5 out of 6 runners from the Caribbean. Along with the Gold and Bronze medalists, it featured Another Jamaican Sheron Simpson who placed 6th, Debbie Ferguson McKenzie of Bahamas who placed 7th and Cydonie McKenzie of the Caymans who finished 8th. The Americans Felix Alyso who won silver Lee Muna 4th, and Mrshevet Hooker made for a very competetive race and are to be commended. Campbell hopes runs again as anchor of the finals of the women's 4x 100 | | | | | | | Beijing Olympic 400m Hurdles Champ Melaine Walker Echos the sentiments of Many Jamaicans | | | This is no average Champion . The 400 Meters is tough enough, much less adding Hurdles which she completed in 52.64 an Olympic record time.
Still focused on reality
In a TV interview given shortly after wining the 400 meter hurdles in record fashion Melaine stated "I would like the people of the area to put the guns down and stop the crime," "I want to ask the Jamaican people, particularly those in Maxfield Avenue, to hold down the crime. I am from that area and at one time it was good to live there. "I know that if we can control the crime we can get back to that point," . She got right to the heart of the matter from the her position on the world stage...
Too many Jamaicans have been touched by crime. This year alone close to 1000 people have been murdered in this island of less than 3 million, making it one of the world's "murder capitols". Many Jamaicans consider this a shameful disgrace. After all this is the island which gave the world the terms "One love" and "Irie"... but now also gave it "shotta "and "badman". Hope Jamaicans , non the less have an indominable spirit that is clearly demonstrated by these atheletes. The dance of Usain bolt, the staunch determination of Melaine , Asafa, and the rest is testimony to that fact.
It is many Jamaicans hope that besides atheletes and singers, every day working people at home and abroad will start to realize that Jamaica can be truly a paradise. Read more at Reuters

After winning his second Gold medal and setting his second world records in the 100m and 200m respectively, in the Beijing Olympics, Usain Bolt, now regarded as the greatest sprinter of all time, celebrated by doing the new Jamaican dance sensation, aptly named the "nuh linga" (roughly translated from Jamaican patoi : "Don't linger " ) See Usain do the "Nuh Lingah" dance He didn't linger around in the 100 meter which he won with records setting time of 9:69 seconds or the 200 meters at 19:30. This feet has never before been done in the olympics. Before him only the United State's Carl lewis was able to win both races in the same olympic games. Usain did 1 better by making them world records wins. Usain bolt also did was Jamaicans have been awaiting for so many years... bringing home a long overdue gold medal in the premier sprinting event the 100m. There have been Jamaicans and Jamaican born sprinters who have gotten gold before. The first being Arthur Stanley Wint in 1948 Olympics , Ben Johnson who ran for Canada in 1988 , only to be later disqualified for banned substance use, put the island back in the 100m gold medal circuit temporariliy. Jamaicans where elated then thoroughly disappointed as many countries, many tried to cast a shadow over Jamaican atheletes. Donovan Bailey born in Manchester Jamaica, won gold in the 100m and 4x 100m in the olympics running for Canada in 1996, Linford Christie, Born in St Andrew's Jamaica ran for Gold in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. It has been a steady march towards this moment since Donald Quarrie ran for silver in Montreal 100 m and Gold in the 200m, along with a silver medal in the 4 x 100 in 1984. . For years Jamaicans such as Merlene Ottie , arguably one of the greatest Olympic atheletes, with an unprecedented five time appearance, attempted to gain gold in the women's 100m and 200 meters. She managed to secure silver in both as well as the 4 x 100 meters. The fact is Usain bolt, blasted open the door. His lead was quickly followed by in the woman’s 100 meter, 200 meters and the women’s 400 meter hurdles. Now the hopes are set on making it complete with a gold in the 4 x 100 meters in both men and women's relays. This could even make it possible for the disappointed Asafa Powell to get his first gold. Usain Bolt just days after the Birthday of Jamaica's first national hero, Marcus Garvey , is set to be the very latest , leading by example.
