Island Riddims Show on CD 101.1 FM Broadcasts from Barrio and on your cell phone

CD 101.1 Island Riddims at Barrios, Coumbus Ohio

CD 101.1 Island Riddims at Barrios, Coumbus Ohio

Been looking for Caribbean music on the radio? Well good luck if you are scanning the dial . It’s not easy here in the mid west but it isn’t impossible easy. Columbus is definitely getting steadily more diverse and the unique contribution of the Caribbean community is playing its role. At least for 2 hour a week there is one place you can hear a little Soca, Calypso and Reggae tunes.

Dj Trevor has been spinning every Sunday night from 7pm- 9pm non stop and without fail for years now. The blend is usually about 70% Reggae and Reggae Dancehall and 20% Soca and Calypso with a bit of Reggaeton and Afro pop mixxed in. The Island Riddims crew is comprised of Clifton Hardy , Trevor Hall aka DJ Trevor and Theresa Woldeab. Continue Reading

Nelson George Tours Kingston Jamaica For The New Black Altas Website

Posted on 05 November 2009

BLACKATLAS.COM – KINGSTON, JAMAICA

“Kingston, Jamaica has a tough reputation that dates back to the bloody political turmoil of the ‘70s and the crack wars of the ‘80s. Even dancehall, the hot music that has replaced traditional reggae as the island’s chief musical export, has a deservedly edgy vibe. Before I headed down to Jamaica’s capitol I had all kinds of stereotypes about Kingston in my head.”  This is how Nelson George started his blog entry about his trip to Jamaica for the new Black Atlast website. What is is interesting is where he goes from there. Read more on Nelson George’s Blog

If you are an avid watcher of either MTV or VH-1 you would likely recognize Nelson George immediately. He’s the one usually bringing balance to the discourse by injecting in some historical context for what is being featured. In other words if you happen to find pop culture.. or black popular culture interesting but you like to delve a little bit deeper below the superficial he’s the guy that grabs your attention. It’s not that everyone else isn’t funny it’s just….well you know.. you have sense.  He usually gives his well thought out and cogent perspective on any number of topics primarily having to do with African American culture.

He is an Author, screen writer, producer and cultural critic with more than just a short list of credits to his name. For starters he is the executive producer on BET’s American Gangster and the fifth airing of VH1’s Hip Hop Honors. George is the executive producer of the Chris Rock’s feature documentary, Good Hair, a look at hair weaves, relaxers and the international black hair economy. It is currently out in theaters nationwide .

He takes this insightful and nuanced way of looking at life with him to the streets of  Kingston Jamaica. Continue Reading

Queen Ifrica and Tony Rebel Live in Columbus Ohio !

Queen Ifrica and Tony Rebel Live in Concert: Ohio and Maryland

Tour Dates for Queen Ifrica and Tony Rebel included:

Queen Ifrica has had a banner year. There  is no question that she has had one of the best Reggae albums of 2010.  Montego bay demonstrated her rapidly maturing style and soulful virtuosity. She has stayed firm on the charts in her homeland of Jamaica throughout the summer and is certainly rapidly securing her place as more than just a passing interest but an artist here to stay.

There is so much to say about Tony Rebel. If there is any song that comes to mind when you think of Rebel is his early 90’s hit on the LalleBella Rythmn.: Jah Is By My Side

As far as helping to bring a resurgence of rasta consciousness in the dancehall few have been as consistent as Rebel. It was Tony Rebel who was instrumental in bringing Queen Ifrica to the forefront which is just further testement to his eye for genuine talent.

Immigration

On Becoming a Citizen of the U.S. Part I : The check list

Posted on 30 October 2009

There has been a lot of reason for some immigrants in the U.S. to consider becoming citizens. While there are a lot of benefits that one can avail ones self of as a permanent residents there are certainly rights and privileges that only citizens have. .

Many immigrants are firmly rooted in their respective cultures and some even fervently nationalistic. Their identity is often very much aligned with their culture and country of origin. For them making the decision to become a citizen is not that as easy as just filling out another form. It is often a deeply felt decision making process.

Before even thinking about becoming a citizen, however, one has to consider a few important things. Continue Reading
